The Dark Side of Beauty

watch?v=puRF_UqcwWQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xcc2550&color2=0xe87a9f]

Defining beauty isn’t as simple as looking it up in the dictionary. Everyone has their own view of what it means and what it should look like. We’re living in times where there is so much more acceptance of what beautiful can look like. If so, why does beauty keep getting put in one box of possibilities? The more time passes us by, the more ways are created to change the appearance of the human body. Today, it’s unlikely to come across a person who is 100% happy with themselves and never think about making any changes to their body. Women especially. More than ever they’re taking matters into their own hands, or the hands of a surgeon, and making sure those changes take place.

Plastic surgery is performed daily and it’s done all over the world. The age range in girls and women going under the knife are decreasing, while the number of surgeries are going up. Back in 2005 BBC News reported that 40% of teens wanted plastic surgery. This was out of a group of 2,000 girls who averaged about 14 years old. The main cause of them opting for plastic surgery was to resemble the celebrities they saw in the media. With the increasing coverage of the, seemingly perfected bodies, of the women in the media, it’s no wonder plastic surgery is at the tip of many women’s mouths.

The plastic surgery craze doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Heidi Montag, the 23 year old reality star of the MTV hit show the Hills, had 10 procedures done in one day. Some of the things Heidi had performed were, fat injections to her cheeks and lips, chin reduction, and ears pinned back among other things. This was an experience that almost left Heidi dead, yet she says she’d still get more work done.

Naomy DeJesus, 19 year old sophomore said, “I think young girls are getting work done so early because they want the perfect body. It’s a way to feel better about their body.”

Whatever happened to working out and eating better? We’re living in times waiting for things to change is overrated and instant gratification is more popular.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is one of the attributes of the rise in plastic surgery. Mayoclinic.com defines BDD as, ” …A type of chronic mental illness in which you can’t stop thinking about a flaw with your appearance- a flaw either that is minor or that you imagine.” People who suffer from BDD are extremely self conscious and often believe they have a defect in their appearance. Medication and therapy is offered for this disorder, but the easier choice in the minds of people is to get plastic surgery.

Women sometimes strive for the impossible image of what they’ve been programmed to think is “beautiful”. What young girls and women don’t always get to see is the behind the scenes work it takes to for women on TV and magazines to look “beautiful”. Dovehas taken a step towards changing the views of what beauty is and raising self confidence in young girls and women. Dove’s campaign consists of programs designed to raise the self esteem of girls, positive advertisements, and a fund to continue their programs running for future young women. With more programs like the one Dove is running, we can change the idea of what beauty is.

A Step Towards Healthy Hair

I’ve been guilty of it for years. Not weeks, or months, but years. I’m one of those people who wash their hair everyday. It’s sort of like a Catch 22 for me. I want my hair to look shiny and healthy everyday; yet washing it constantly is doing the opposite. For those of us with fine hair, it can get pretty annoying when your hair gets dirty so quickly. Washing your hair everyday strips it of the naturals oils it creates and needs to moisturize your scalp. Some create the oils quicker than others.I’ve always been skeptical of it, but there are dry shampoos you can use. Dry shampoo looks like a hair spray can usually, and you spray your roots. It’s supposed to help decrease the amount of oils, helping you keep a cleaner scalp longer. Different companies sell them. Bumble&Bumble has a popular one. Tresemme now offers dry shampoo and a mousse. The mouse if for thicker, curly hair. Since the spray form is more airy, it’s best for fine hair.A quickie you can try at home is powder. Sprinkle a bit of powder on your scalp and massage it. The powder soaks up the oils. When you do wash your hair make sure you’re massaging the shampoo on your scalp, because that is what’s lifts the oils off the root. Conditioner should only be applied to your ends and the bottom half of your hair. When all else fails, ACCESSORIZE. Throw on a cute headband or pull your hair back with a fabulous clip.

Feet Essentials

Do your feet ever get rough, dry, or flaky? The summertime is not the right time to be dealing with this problem, but if you are facing this dilemma don’t freak out. Just how you can exfoliate other parts of your body, you can do the same for your feet as well. Avon has a great foot scrub, it’s called Foot Works Tropical Coconut Sea Salt Foot Scrub. It smells delicious and reminds me of beachy days, which is perfect for the season. At $5, I’d say this is definitely a steal. It doesn’t take much time either. Apply the foot scrub to the necessary areas and leave for 2 to 3 minutes then rinse. Using a foot file scrub the dead skin off. You’ll have summer ready feet in no time.

Maintaining great care of your feet is essential. Sabon’s Foot Cream prevents foot odor, fungus and softens your feet. The foot cream is based on menthol and camphor. Menthol gives it the fresh scent, while camphor is the number on antiperspirant. This is a foot care must-have.

Blot The Shine Away

Spring is upon us. It’s time to bring the cute dresses out and throw some shades on. While the weather is beautiful, your face might not be agreeing with it. This is the season when oily skin is most problematic. Oily skin can’t be completely done away with, but it can be somewhat prevented.

Washing you face nightly is key. You don’t want the dirt and oils clogging your pores overnight. After washing away all the icky stuff try an astringent. Using a cotton ball you pat it all around your face. Not only is it great at helping to clear up your skin, but it removes the shine from your face. I use Biore’s Triple Action Astringent. It’s sensitive enough to use daily and doesn’t dry out my face.

Obviously you can’t go around patting your face with an astringent and that’s why blotting sheets were created. My faves are Clean&Clear’s Oil Absorbing Sheets. You pat the sheets all around your face, especially where you’re most oily. And wha-lah!… the greasy shine is gone. You can actually see the oil on the blotting sheets. It’s easy, discrete, and it fits in your purse. Don’t let unwanted shine on your face ruin this summer.
