How did your love for design and fashion start?
I always loved clothes and dress up from a young age. I had wanted to study fashion design and did learn to sew however those dreams never materialized. Nevertheless, I always took the opportunity to experiment with my clothes. Looking back I realize I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum when it came to fashion. I am also a lover of thrift shops. I love being able to find a bargain and build a great look around it.
House of Shakti uses crystals for healing, could you explain to our readers how this process works?
Crystals and gemstones have been known since ancient times to carry healing powers. Many holistic therapist practice what they call “laying on of stones”. Based on your physical ailments or symptoms, stones would be chosen and placed on the body on energy centers called “chakras”. The idea is that placing these stones in ones energy field can help heal dis-ease, dispel negativity, increase vitality, inspire creativity, and much more.
What does Shakti mean?
Known in Hinduism as the “mother goddess”, Shakti symbolizes the female divine force. She is the source of all, the universal principle of energy, power, and creativity. Shakti empowers us to be conscious creators in our lives inspiring positive change, not only in us, but in the world around us as well.
According to your bio on your website you’re a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor! How has this influenced work?
I actually discovered the concept of healing with crystals during my yoga training while attending a meditation retreat. I was so drawn to the crystals that I decided to study them. In addition, my yoga practice taught me about chakras as well as helped push me to step outside of my comfort zone. Before yoga, I didn’t realize how much creativity I had inside me. Meditation does wonders for the body and mind and I highly recommend it.
What’s your favorite piece of jewelry that you have designed so far?
I don’t really have a consistent favorite. I fall in love with each piece I make for different reasons. I am partial to my Archangel Michael necklace and bracelet, my Scarf Necklaces (they are so versatile), the Affirmation Bracelets, and my Mala for Confidence & Protection.
How do you get the beautiful gemstones that go into your jewelry designs?
I source my gems from many places. Sometimes local gem shows and sometimes from other countries like Thailand and India.
Could you explain what chakras are and how your jewelry helps bring out?
Chakras are energy centers along the spine. The chakras are part of the network through which your body, mind and spirit interact as a whole system. Seven major chakras exist and are located within the body. They are considered to be a source of energy to the body and any imbalance in them can create dis-ease in the body as well. For example, people with an imbalanced throat chakra (the center for expression and communication) may experience bouts of sore throat or just an inability to express themselves.
How do you combine fashion and spirituality?
I wanted to not only create accessories that were fashionable, but that carried a meaning to them. Like a beautiful poem or song can evoke a beautiful emotion or spiritual feeling for someone, I thought why not with jewelry. To me, spirituality is about interdependence. Learning to live and love together in harmony, consciously. This was something lacking in my life for many years and is still a daily practice for me. So I find myself incorporating it into everything I do, including my jewelry.
What are among your favorite colors to use when designing jewelry?
I love neutrals, reds, oranges, and the combination of black and silver.
